Gua sha (pronounced "gwah-shah") is an East Asian healing technique. A trained practitioner uses a small, smooth-edged tool to scrape the skin with firm, unidirectional strokes. This is believed to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation.
So, how can gently scraping the skin promote healing? According to traditional Chinese medicine, good health relies on the smooth flow of chi, or vital energy, throughout the body. If this energy becomes blocked in a specific area, health issues may arise. Gua sha is thought to release these blockages and restore the natural flow of energy.
Gua sha is also known as coining, spooning, or skin scraping. In Indonesia, it's called "Kerikan," and in Vietnam, it's known as "Cao gio."
While gua sha is a relatively new concept in the West, it has been used in China for over 2,000 years. It is often used to help treat chronic pain. Recently, gua sha has gained attention for its potential skin benefits, though more research is needed to confirm these effects.
What to Expect During a Treatment
To prepare for the treatment, the practitioner will apply oil to your skin. They will then use a gua sha tool (often made of stone, wood or jade) to scrape your skin in long, downward strokes. This motion causes tiny capillaries under the skin to rupture, resulting in temporary, small, red, rash-like dots called petechiae.
As the session continues, the practitioner may gradually increase the pressure. They should only apply as much pressure as you are comfortable with. Gua sha should not be painful; you will likely feel a firm, warming pressure.

The scraping action and the resulting petechiae are believed to activate both the immune and nervous systems, initiating a complex physiological response. Research suggests that when performed correctly, gua sha may stimulate the release of chemicals that improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and promote healing in the treated area.
